The 3 Money Mindset Shifts That Changed Everything for Me

Financial Freedom Friday is back. Last week we talked about smart money moves you can make right now. This week, I want to get real with you about something that comes before the budgets, the investing, and the income strategies.

Your mindset.

Because here’s the truth: you can have all the financial knowledge in the world, but if your mind is stuck in scarcity, fear, and overwhelm, you’ll stay frozen in place.

I know because I’ve been there.

The night I realized I didn’t need a new job—I needed a new perspective

My husband had just moved out. COVID had hit. I had three kids under 7, and I was absolutely terrified.

I remember sitting at my laptop late one night, scouring the internet for overnight stocking jobs at HEB. I was convinced that was my only option—that I had to do something immediately, even if it meant working all night and somehow managing three little ones and a full career during the day.

I was in panic mode.

But here’s what I didn’t realize then: that wasn’t my next best step. It wasn’t even feasible.

What I needed wasn’t another job.

What I needed was to shift how I was thinking about my situation.

The 3 money mindset shifts that changed everything for me

1. From “If I had a partner, this would be easier” to “I am more than capable”

This scarcity script kept me in victim mode. Yes, having a partner might make some things easier—but waiting for that or resenting its absence kept me powerless.

When I started affirming, “I am more than capable,” I began to see my own strength, resourcefulness, and ability to create solutions.

I stopped waiting for rescue and started taking ownership.

2. From “I have to do it all at once” to “I don’t have to do it all overnight—I can take the next best step”

That night searching for overnight jobs? That was the “do it all at once” panic talking. I thought I needed to immediately solve every financial problem in one dramatic move.

The truth? Financial freedom is built one intentional step at a time.

Not overnight.

Not all at once.

Just the next best step.

For me that night, it wasn’t a second job. It was getting clear on my expenses, reaching out for support, and making a plan.

3. Replacing scarcity scripts with abundance affirmations

This is the practice that ties it all together. Our brains run on repeat scripts—many of them formed in childhood or during crisis moments.

Scarcity scripts sound like:

  • “There’s never enough.”
  • “I’m not good with money.”
  • “I’ll never get ahead.”
  • “This is too hard for me.”

Abundance affirmations sound like:

  • “I create my own financial security.”
  • “I am learning and growing every day.”
  • “I take radical responsibility for my future.”
  • “I am capable of more than I know.”

The shift happens when you catch the scarcity script and intentionally replace it with an abundance affirmation.

Your turn: a simple 3-step practice for this week

Here’s what I want you to do this week:

  1. Notice your scarcity scripts. What do you tell yourself about money when you’re stressed? Write them down.
  2. Create your abundance affirmations. For each scarcity script, write an empowering truth to replace it.
  3. Practice daily. Say your affirmations out loud. Put them on sticky notes. Set them as phone reminders.

This isn’t “woo-woo” stuff—this is rewiring your brain to see possibility instead of limitation.

And that’s where financial freedom begins.
